The judicial process against the former president of Albania, Ilir Meta, begins

The judicial process against the former president of Albania, Ilir Meta, who is in custody and accused of several criminal offenses, has started today, reports Anadolu.

In the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO), the first session was held, while Meta was also present.

Meta has asked the GJKKO to guarantee the live broadcast of this whole process, a request for which the court has not yet made a decision.

The lawyer of ex-president Meta, Kujtim Cakrani, in a statement to the media today emphasized that it is unacceptable that the hearings for the said trial are not given directly to the public.

Meanwhile, Meta’s ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, who was present today at the first hearing in foundation.

The next hearing for this judicial process is reported to be held on May 11.

The courts in Albania have also rejected former president Meta’s requests for release from custody.

Former president Meta was arrested on October 21, 2024, suspected of committing several criminal offenses in connection with the case known as “CEZ-DIA service contract” and for “lobbying contracts in the USA”.

Currently, Meta is in custody. According to the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), Meta is suspected of money laundering, corruption and non-declaration of assets.

Meta, who is currently the chairman of the opposition party, the Freedom Party, has held senior positions in Albanian state institutions.
