UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz amid stalled peace talks between the US and Iran, reports Anadolu.
“I call on the parties: Open the Strait. Let ships pass. No tariffs. No discrimination. Let trade resume. Let the global economy breathe,” Guterres said during a high-level debate at the UN Security Council. UN maritime security assurance.
The Strait of Hormuz — through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquid natural gas passes — has experienced major disruptions since early March, after the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on February 28. The war is currently on pause and efforts are underway to finally end it.
“Since early March, the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has hit global energy security, food supplies and trade. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime points,” Guterres said.
