Peter Magyar was sworn in as Hungary’s prime minister today, marking the end of Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule, Anadolu reports.

Magyar was sworn in to parliament after his centre-right Tisza party secured a landslide victory in last month’s election, defeating Orbán’s nationalist-populist Fidesz alliance.

Tisza won a two-thirds majority in parliament with 199 seats, securing enough MPs to reverse key policies established during Orban’s years of rule.

Magyar entered the parliament building together with MPs from his party, which now controls 141 seats. Orbán’s Fidesz-KDNP alliance suffered a steep decline, ending up with 52 seats, while the far-right Our Fatherland movement secured six seats.

President Tamas Sulyok earlier asked Magyar to form the new government after his Tisza party achieved an unprecedented victory in the April elections, Magyar Nemzet newspaper reported.

Sulyok said Hungarian voters “have expressed their will” and entrusted Tisza with the responsibility for governing the country.

All 199 MPs and 11 minority representatives handed in their mandates before the MPs took the oath during the session.

Magyar stated that the main priorities of the new government will be the fight against corruption and ensuring the return of EU funds, frozen due to concerns about the rule of law and corruption.

“The most important task will be to stop corruption and return EU funds”, he said before the session.

His government is also expected to seek rapprochement with the European Union after years of tensions during Orbani’s leadership.

MPs also elected the new Speaker of Parliament Agnes during the session, where Tisza’s candidate, Forsthoffer, received this post.
