Strange case in the Czech Republic: how the skull of an 800-year-old saint was stolen from a basilica
A unique relic, the 13th-century skull of St. Zdislaus, was stolen from a basilica in the north of the Czech Republic, and police are still searching for the perpetrator.
According to information from the Czech police, it is a relic of priceless historical and spiritual value that was located in the reliquary inside the Basilica of St. Lawrence and St. Zdislaus. Investigators say the thief broke the glass reliquary, removed a very fragile skull and fled the scene.
Police also released a surveillance video showing the suspect and called on citizens to help find him, local portals report.
Prague Archbishop Stanislav Přibyl described the theft as “devastating,” stressing that the relic has great spiritual value for believers.
“The skull was an object of veneration for the many pilgrims who came to Jablonné, where Saint Zdislava lived and worked more than 750 years ago,” said the archbishop.
Saint Zdislava lived in the 13th century and is known for her care for the poor and the sick. He founded a monastery and a hospital where he treated the sick. /square
