UN marks Nakba anniversary amid warnings of Gaza crisis

The United Nations commemorated the anniversary of the Nakba on Friday, as senior officials warned that the suffering and displacement experienced by Palestinians since 1948 continues amid the conflict in Gaza, Anadolu reports.

The event, organized by the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, was held at UN headquarters to highlight the continuing impact of the Nakba — the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948.

Addressing the audience, the president of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, described the Nakba as an ongoing historical “pain” passed down through the generations.

“They fled their homes, their homes were destroyed, their lives and livelihoods were destroyed. overturned. In one moment, an entire people was scattered,” she said.

“It’s a pain that continues across generations and thousands of miles away. It’s a pain that only meaningful justice can bring relief to,” Baerbock added. She said the issue remains deeply relevant because the Palestinians’ suffering has not ended.

Baerbock also emphasized the UN’s continuing responsibility to pursue a just solution to the conflict. Israeli-Palestinian.

“One of the first tasks of the United Nations was to find a just solution to conflicts and crises around the world, including the Palestinian issue,” Baerbock said, adding “For 78 long years, this institution, along with many other peace processes, has worked to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

She called on member states not to lose sight of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which he described as “catastrophic”, despite the announcement of a ceasefire last October.

“A ceasefire, which does not mean peace, but more killing, even of children, is not peace and it is not a ceasefire. It is a continuation of the fire”, said Baerbock.

Meanwhile, Khaled Khiari, the UN assistant secretary-general for the Middle East, Europe, America, Asia and Pacific, also warned that conditions in Gaza remain grave.

“The situation in Gaza today is a catastrophe of grave proportions,” Khiari told participants.
