The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, held a telephone conversation with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, where he emphasized that the increase in tensions in the region once again highlights the strategic importance of relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU), reports Anadolu.
Turkey’s Communications Directorate on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal announced that the conversation included Turkey-EU relations, as well as regional developments and global.
During the conversation, Erdogan said that Turkey has worked to maintain the ceasefire and ensure peace in the ongoing conflict in the region, adding that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened as soon as possible.
He said that Israel seeks the continuation of conflicts in the region and continues to violate international law, including actions described as piracy, and stressed the need to increase international pressure on Israel.
The Turkish president also emphasized that Turkey’s involvement in European security strategy initiatives would be beneficial, that the Turkey-EU Customs Union should be updated and that cooperation should be expanded in all areas to strengthen economic integration and advance common interests.
