Ukrainian drones struck targets in several regions of Russia overnight, including an oil pumping station, a refinery and a fuel depot, Russian and Ukrainian authorities said Sunday, as part of an escalating campaign of attacks against Russian energy infrastructure.
Ukraine’s General Staff said it had struck the Saratov oil refinery, located on the Volga River, causing a major fire.
The governor of of the Saratov region, wrote on Telegram that “civilian infrastructure” was damaged by the attack, but did not provide other details.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had shot down 216 drones overnight.
Official Kiev also announced that it had hit the Lazarevo pumping station in the Kirov region, northeast of Moscow and about 1,300 kilometers from the territory controlled by Ukraine. The station serves the Surgut–Gorky–Polotsk pipeline, which transports Russian oil from Siberia to Belarus.
The governor of the Kirov region, Alexander Sokolov, said drones had hit a facility in the region, but gave no further details.
Meanwhile, on the Russian-controlled Crimean peninsula, Moscow-backed governor Sergei Aksyonov said authorities were imposing restrictions on the sale of of gasoline.
He did not explain why, but Ukraine has been attacking fuel infrastructure in southwestern Russia near Crimea for months.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia had launched 229 drones overnight, of which 212 were downed over northern and eastern Ukraine.
