Singapore has launched a nationwide movement to help families create healthy digital habits in children by reducing the time they spend in front of screens, Anadolu reported.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong launched the “Smart Screen from the Start” campaign, which aims to help parents seeking guidance on how to manage their children’s digital activities.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Wong said the government will provide resources and materials. aids to help parents develop healthy digital habits in children from an early age.
Parents can now use the “Be Screen Smart” portal, which offers advice for children and young people, divided into three age groups: 0-6 years, 7-12 years and 13-18 years.
Through the portal, parents can learn how to select the content their children can see for protect them from inappropriate material online, as well as how to set clear family rules for the use of electronic devices.
Wong said that in the past parents worried about comics, television and video games, but today’s challenge of technology and screen time is “more intense” because of the addictive features, as well as potentially harmful content and toxic interactions online.
Listing some ways to help, Wong suggested that phones are not used during family meals and preferably not kept in bedrooms, as parents cannot control whether children use them at night.
He also said parents should delay giving their children smartphones as long as possible.
The portal will also include a range of offline activities for families with children of all ages, starting with the June school holidays.
