The number of Ebola cases and deaths is increasing in DR Congo

Confirmed cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo exceeded 300 on Monday, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Health, reports Anadolu.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the virus rose to 48. The epidemic continues to spread, now affecting 23 health zones in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, the ministry said.

Ituri, a region hit by years uncertainty, has seen confirmed cases exceed 260.

Health authorities said community resistance in the provincial capital Bunia and the northeastern city of Nizi as well as disinformation are complicating response efforts.

Authorities said Monday that four patients have recovered and left the Evangelical Medical Center in Bunia.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus concluded his visit to DR Congo on Monday after meeting with President Felix Tshisekedi to discuss the response to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.

Authorities and partners have opened a new 60-bed treatment center in Bunia and are conducting vaccine trials.

Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said that after installing monitoring equipment at both departures and arrivals, Bunia airport, which was closed except for humanitarian flights, reopened on Monday to facilitate the provision of response support.
