The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that it has verified 190 attacks on health facilities and personnel in Lebanon over the past three months, warning that the country’s health system is facing increasing pressure amid escalating violence, Anadolu reports.
The WHO representative in Lebanon, Abdinasir Abubakar, told reporters in Geneva that more than 3,400 people have been killed and nearly 10,400 have been injured since the latest Israeli escalation began in March.
“These have been among the deadliest months for Lebanon since the conflict began in October 2023,” he said.
According to him, attacks on the health sector have killed 128 health workers and injured 332 others.
“These attacks not only kill and maim. people, but also deprive them of the health services they need just when they need them the most,” Abubakar said.
According to the WHO, some 130,000 people are currently living in shelters after fleeing the fighting zones, a number that could rise following recent Israeli orders to evacuate parts of Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Abubakar said 17 hospitals were partially damaged, while three hospitals and 42 care centers primary health centers remain closed.
He also singled out an attack on Jebel Amel Hospital that happened on Monday and is still being verified. According to initial information from Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, at least 86 people, including health workers, have been injured, while parts of the hospital, including the emergency and intensive care units, have been damaged.
“We need the attacks to stop and health care to be actively protected,” Abubakar said, calling for stable funding, unimpeded humanitarian access and a lasting ceasefire.
