Thursday, July 16th 2026

The accident and emergency department at Caldas da Rainha hospital in Portugal treated more than 60 people last week with symptoms as varied as vomiting and diarrhea and, in some cases, nausea, fever, abdominal pain and headache, leading to the identification of an outbreak of norovirus.

According to local newspaper Jornal das Caldas, the city council has since confirmed 122 people infected, after receiving a report with the results of laboratory tests.

Most of the identified cases – about 80 – are related to an international youth football tournament organized by the company Footmania, held in the municipalities of Caldas da Rainha and Óbidos between June 24 and July 8.

Public health authorities and ASAE (Food and Economic Safety Authority) carried out tests on the food service provided by the company, collecting samples.

However, no evidence was found to suggest this was the source.

The investigation is reportedly ongoing to determine the origin of the outbreak.

However, norovirus is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis and is highly contagious.

It is spread from person to person through contact with contaminated objects and surfaces and also by consuming water or food.

Start In the summer, health authorities warned that “with heat, longer days, eating out, holidays, beaches, holiday clubs and family gatherings” there is a greater chance that some viruses will spread.
