Lava continues to flow on Italy’s Mount Etna as a new fissure opens

Friday, January 2nd 2026

Volcanic activity on Mount Etna continues after paroxysms recorded at the end of December 2025 in the northeast crater in Catania, Italy, reports Anadolu.

Although the explosive activity at the summit has decreased, on January 1, 2026 a new eruption fissure opened at about 2,000 meters on the eastern slope of the volcano, generating a lava flow towards Valle del Bove valley.

Experts are monitoring the lateral effusive activity, which remains far from residential areas and does not pose an immediate threat. The VONA alert level remains orange while Catania International Airport remains fully operational, with no impact on air traffic.

Photos taken from Zafferana Etnea, near Catania, show the impact of the lava flow.

Mount Etna is one of the most famous and active volcanoes in the world as it is in almost constant activity, with effusive and explosive eruptions.

While eruptions are frequent, they are usually not catastrophic for the nearby population, but they can disrupt air travel and damage infrastructure.
