Bad weather hits northern India, 89 people die

At least 89 people have died as a result of bad weather in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said, reports Anadolu.

Casualties were reported in several districts due to severe weather, including strong winds, heavy rain and lightning, across the state on Wednesday, according to officials.

“Due to adverse weather conditions, 89 people lost their lives. lives while 53 others were injured,” the state’s Relief Commissariat said via US social media company X.

Continuous monitoring is being carried out through direct communication with district officials to ensure that necessary funds are made available to the districts, the Commissariat added.

Earlier, officials said 15 people lost their lives and eight others were injured in separate incidents due to severe storms in Bhadohi district on Wednesday evening, said Shailesh Kumar, a senior civil official. He pointed out that trees and electric poles fell due to strong winds, which led to casualties.

Nine other people were killed and 16 injured when a strong storm hit Fatehpur district.

“Teams of administrative officials are continuously monitoring the affected areas,” police in X said today.

Lose of lives were also reported in Budaun, where five people lost their lives in storm-related incidents, while one person died in Sonbhadra district, the “Press Trust of India” reported.

Meanwhile, rains lashed parts of the capital New Delhi, also affecting air traffic at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
