Broccoli may be the secret to treating diabetes, as a compound in this vegetable helps lower blood sugar levels. A recent study has found that eating or consuming broccoli in liquid form can help prevent and treat type 2 diabetes.
Lifestyle changes – particularly keeping obesity under control – are an important way to keep the disease under control. While in some people, medicines can also cause side effects. Metformin – a drug widely used for this disease as it lowers blood sugar levels – cannot be taken by 15% of people with diabetes because of its effects on the kidneys
Professor Anders Rosengren, from the Lund University Diabetes Center in Sweden, says: As sulforaphane has very few side effects and can be easily obtained from broccoli – for example – it has the potential to become a complement to current treatments for type 2 diabetes. 2.
Professor Rosengren recommends that people who suffer from diabetes or prediabetes use broccoli as a food to keep the disease under control or prevent its progression.
During the 12-week study, of 97 obese patients, those who took broccoli experienced significant decreases in blood glucose levels in
sober state, compared to those who took medication. In addition to broccoli, sulforaphane is also found in other vegetables of the cabbage family, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower.
