Extreme heat, foods that help the body fight dehydration

Sunday, June 28th 2026

The high temperatures of recent days significantly increase the risk of dehydration, as the body loses through sweating large amounts of fluids and important minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Specialists advise that, in addition to water consumption, hydration should also be supported by rich foods with high water content.

The most common signs of dehydration are dry mouth, chapped lips, headache, dizziness, dark colored urine and muscle cramps. Experts point out that the feeling of thirst often appears late, when the body has already started to lose a significant amount of fluids.

At the top of the list of the most hydrating foods are cucumbers and radishes, which contain about 96% water. Then come lettuce and zucchini with 95%, tomatoes with 94%, as well as watermelon and melon, which are considered among the most refreshing summer fruits. These products help to replace lost fluids and supply the body with vitamins, fibers and mineral salts.

Celery, dill, green peppers, spinach and asparagus are also recommended, which contribute to hydration and maintaining the balance of the body during hot days. As for fruits, strawberries, peaches, pineapples and apricots are ideal alternatives to combat fatigue, thirst and the drop in tension that often accompany extreme heat.
