The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Marko Djuric said today in Brussels that the key message of Serbia at the informal meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of the European Union (EU) and the Western Balkans is that Europe should speed up the integration process and open the Schengen area for the Balkan region as soon as possible, reports Anadolu.
“It is frustrating that we have strong borders every 150 to 200 kilometers that literally interrupt the movement and life of people, families, but also the economy, tourism, everything else, and there is no reason why Europe should not enable the full potential of our region’s inclusion in Schengen already this summer”, Gjuriq told reporters in Brussels.
According to him, opening the full potential of Schengen to the region would directly bring 50 billion euros of new economic activity and would not reduce the security of the EU and throughout the continent.
“I hope that our European integration process will continue to progress, despite all the ideological and sometimes politically motivated pressures, to which our country is often exposed from some centers”, said Gjuriq.
Talking about the topics of the meeting, he assessed that “we must adapt to the global circumstances” which, according to him, are truly unprecedented.
Gjuriq emphasized that Serbia stands out among the countries that have not yet are members of the EU, for the economic, demographic and geopolitical characteristics as a country that has 53 percent of the regional economy and as a country that is growing faster economically in more than a decade.
He added that in the meeting he also spoke about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), where, as he said, he tried to protect the Serbian interest from those who want to present only the Republika Srpska entity as the main culprit for the difficult relations internal affairs in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Serbia has always been on the side of stability, always and remains on the side of the Dayton Agreement, but Serbia stands firmer in the position that the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina should be the ones who determine the fate of this state, not anyone from outside”, he said. control, at least when it comes to what we can influence,” Gjuriq added.
He added that during the meeting other open issues in the region were discussed as well as the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, stressing that he recalled that the Association of Serb-majority municipalities has not been formed for more than a decade, an obligation signed and agreed in Brussels.
“I was also a witness to this on April 19 2013. The representatives of Pristina have tried to blame Serbia for various regional problems and present it as a source of instability in our region”, said Gjuriq.
