US President Donald Trump has stated that he is considering reviving Operation Project Freedom, but has warned that guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz would be only one component of a “larger military operation” this time, Anadolu reports.
Speaking on Fox News, Trump said that “hardline leaders” in Iran will eventually back down.
Asked if he could cooperate with the current Iranian leadership, Trump said: “I will deal with them until they reach a deal”.
Trump also claimed that Iranian negotiators have told him that Tehran does not have the technology to clean up radioactive material at nuclear-destroyed sites and that the US will have to take the “nuclear dust”.
The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and to US allies in the Persian Gulf, along with closing the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The ceasefire was later extended by Trump without a specific deadline.
On Sunday, Iraq sent Pakistan its response to a US proposal aimed at ending the war, but Trump rejected it as “completely unacceptable”.
