Scientists have identified the cause of very rare blood clots in some people after adenoviral vaccines against Covid‑19, according to the scientific journal ScienceDirect.
These cases, known as VITT (vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT)) occur when the immune system produces antibodies that mistakenly attack a blood protein called PF4, causing clots.
The case is extremely rare and is associated with a combination of genetic background and a small antibody mutation. Symptoms to recognize include severe headache, abdominal pain, swelling of the legs, difficulty breathing and red spots on the skin, usually 7–30 days after vaccination. Experts emphasize that the risk is very small, while the benefits of vaccination against Covid‑19 remain much greater. Understanding this mechanism can help in faster diagnosis and treatment, as well developing safer vaccines in the future.
