“We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope it will lead to lasting peace” in the region, a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs said.
India on Wednesday welcomed a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran, hoping that the cessation of hostilities “will lead to lasting peace” in the Middle East, reports Anadolu.
“We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace” in the region, said a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
“As we have repeatedly advocated before, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to quickly end the ongoing conflict,” she said.
Noting that the conflict has already “caused great suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks,” the ministry said: “We expect that unrestricted freedom of navigation and the global flow of trade to prevail through the Strait of Hormuz”.
The ceasefire was announced by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who said the US and Iran, along with their allies, have agreed to stop fighting in all conflict areas, including Lebanon.
Islamabad has brokered indirect talks between Washington and Tehran and is expected to host delegations from both sides in Islamabad on on Friday.
US President Donald Trump said he agreed to “suspend the bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks”.
The announcement came less than two hours before a deadline Trump had set for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept a deal or face what he described as the destruction of “an entire civilization”.
