“We hope that the war will stop and a ceasefire will last, and we also need a credible guarantee,” said the Iranian ambassador in Beijing, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.

China, Russia, Turkey and Pakistan can work together to guarantee peace in the region, the Iranian ambassador in Beijing said on Wednesday, hours after announcing a temporary ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.

“We hope that different parties will can guarantee that the US will not resume the war,” Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told reporters in Beijing.

“We hope that the UN Security Council, big countries like China and Russia, as well as intermediary countries like Pakistan and Turkey will work together to guarantee peace in the region,” Fazli said, according to the “South China Morning Post”.

“We hope that the war will stop and a ceasefire will last, and we also need a credible guarantee,” he added.

The statement came hours after Pakistan-brokered indirect talks between the US and Iran led to a two-week ceasefire.

Many countries have welcomed the ceasefire.

Notably, China and Russia on Tuesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for coordinated “defensive” measures to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional tensions erupted when Israel and the US launched an offensive against Iran on February 28, killing more than 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian authorities have not updated the death toll in recent days.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure and affecting global markets and aviation.

At least 13 US servicemen were killed and dozens injured during conflict.
