NATO divided over Iran, Albania among the 5 member countries of the alliance alongside the USA

Thursday, March 19th 2026

According to a Forbes article, of the 32 NATO members, only five countries have come out publicly in support of the offensive of the US and Israel against Iran, among them Albania.

Most of the other countries of the alliance have maintained a neutral or critical position towards the operation, making it difficult for President Donald Trump to request military aid and support from the coalition.

In addition to Albania, the countries that have publicly expressed support are: North Macedonia, Lithuania, Latvia and the Czech Republic, while Kosovo, which is not a member of NATO, but has its own bases, has also shown support.

These countries have linked their position with concerns about the Iranian nuclear program, threats to regional stability and Iran’s activities against their allies.

Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, linked Albania’s position with previous diplomatic tensions with Iran. In a post on the X network on February 28, Rama wrote: “We support the United States in its military support of Israel today, under the leadership of President Donald Trump,” while also condemning Iran’s “cyber aggressions” against Albania, which led to the severing of diplomatic relations in 2022. This position positions Albania as a strong ally of the US in the region, writes Forbes.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani reposted the speech of Trump on the attacks on February 28, adding: “The hour of freedom has come for the people of Iran, thanks to the leadership of the United States. We will continue to support the actions of the US and other allies to end the Iranian regime and bring freedom and peace”.

Most NATO countries have maintained a neutral stance on the attacks, including Denmark, Finland and Luxembourg, condemning Iran’s actions but not supporting the military operation. Some countries, such as Italy and Spain, have expressed clear criticism of the attacks, noting the risks to international stability and the humanitarian consequences.

The Forbes article points out that supporting Albania and other small NATO countries puts our country in a clear pro-US and Israel position, showing the strong alliance and commitment to regional security and stability.
