A new study has revealed a possible mechanism through which certain natural components of coffee may affect the way cells deal with stress and damage associated with aging.
Researchers have identified that certain substances found in coffee may interact with a protein called NR4A1, a receptor that plays a role in regulating cellular processes associated with inflammation, stress and damage.
According to the researchers, the most pronounced effects were not associated with caffeine, but with herbal components of coffee, including caffeic acid and some polyphenolic compounds.
In laboratory tests, these compounds caused changes related to decreasing cellular damage and slowing the growth of cancer cells. When the researchers removed the NR4A1 receptor from the cells, these effects were no longer observed, suggesting that this receptor may be a key part of the process.
However, the study authors point out that the results do not prove that drinking coffee prevents disease or directly slows aging in humans. The findings provide only one possible biological explanation for how coffee’s components may affect cells.
The researchers say further research is needed to understand whether these laboratory effects can translate into concrete health benefits in humans.
The research may also pave the way for new studies on NR4A1 as a potential target for developing treatments related to aging, inflammation and various diseases.
