New York’s first Muslim mayor Mamdani cancels pro-Israel decrees

Friday, January 2nd 2026

The first Muslim mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, canceled on the first day of his office several decrees signed by his predecessor, Eric Adams, reports Anadolu.

According to “The New York Times”, after Mamdani was sworn in yesterday, he took action against some of the decisions of the previous administration.

With the decree he signed, Mamdani canceled all the executive orders that Adams approved since September. 2024, the date he was indicted for corruption. Among the rescinded decrees are the ones Adams used with his authority to support Israel.

One of them, signed last month, prohibited city institutions from boycotting Israel or withdrawing investment from Israel. Another executive order signed by Adams in June 2025 provided for the expansion of the definition of anti-Semitism to include specific types of criticism of Israel.

After the Nov. 4 election, the 34-year-old Ugandan-born Mamdani became “the youngest and first Muslim to lead the largest US city in the last century.”

According to CBS News, more than 2 million citizens voted in the election, which is said to be “the highest turnout since 1969”.

Mamdani swore in the Quran yesterday in a public ceremony attended by thousands of New Yorkers, thus becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York.
