Norway reports record levels of energy drink consumption among teenagers

Wednesday, June 3rd 2026

More than half of Norwegian teenagers aged 13 to 15 reported having consumed energy drinks in 2025, the report from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health shows, raising concerns about caffeine intake and potential health risks among young people, reports Anadolu.

Public broadcaster NRK reported that the study, which examined energy drink consumption from 2017 to 2025, found that 56 percent of respondents aged 13-15 consumed energy drinks in 2024-2025. Of those, 36 percent reported drinking them at least weekly while 7 percent consumed them daily.

Researchers said energy drinks have become a routine part of daily life for many young people and warned that some teens are consuming enough caffeine to exceed recommended safe levels for minors.

Health experts cited risks including sleep disruption, anxiety, palpitations and heart attacks, headaches, caffeine addiction and in extreme cases, caffeine poisoning. The data was collected before Norway introduced a nationwide minimum age of 16 for buying energy drinks on January 1.

The government said the findings underscore the need for measures to limit young people’s access to energy drinks and indicated it would closely monitor the impact of the new age restriction. Authorities said additional measures, including public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives, may be considered depending on future consumption trends.
