Tuesday, March 10th 2026

Syria appointed a deputy defense minister for the eastern region, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Anadolu reports.

Assem Ghalyoun, director of media and communications at the Syrian Ministry of Defense, said Sipan Hamo was appointed to the post covering the country’s eastern region.

The appointment comes as part of a January 30 “comprehensive agreement” between the government and the terrorist organization. YPG/SDF, which aims to end the division in the country and start a new phase of integration. It said the agreement, which includes the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli as well as the integration of military forces, complements an earlier agreement signed on January 18.

The latest agreement followed a military operation by the Syrian Army in which it retook large areas in eastern and northeastern Syria after repeated violations of a March 2025 agreement by the SDF.
