The number of pupils and students in Kosovo is falling

According to KAS, the number of children included in daycare and preschool during the 2025/2026 school year reached 35 thousand 948, or 1 thousand 910 more compared to the previous year, when 34 thousand 38 children were registered.

Of the total number, 24 thousand 422 children or 67.9 percent continue education in public institutions, while 11 thousand 526 or 32.1 percent in private ones.

On the other hand, ASK announces that the number of students in primary and lower secondary education has fallen to 198 thousand 639, from 208 thousand 515 a year ago. Of them, 194 thousand 314 follow lessons in the public sector, while 4 thousand 325 in the private sector.

“The number of students in primary and lower secondary education in the school year 2025/2026 was 198 639, of them in the public sector were 194 314 or 97.8% and in the private sector 4 325 or 2.2%. Meanwhile, in the 2024/2025 school year, the number of students was 208,515, of which 199,190 or 95.5% were in the public sector and 9,325 or 4.5% in the private sector”, says the KAS report.

The data show that participation in the public sector has increased in percentage, while the private sector has recorded a decrease in the number of students compared to the school year. 2024/2025.

The decline is also evident in higher secondary education. During the 2025/2026 school year, 62 thousand 85 students were registered, compared to 63 thousand 551 the year before.

56 thousand 892 students or 91.6 percent of the total attend public schools, while 5 thousand 193 students or 8.4 percent attend private schools. KAS estimates that, although the total number has decreased, the private sector has recorded a slight increase in participation.

According to the report, a slight decrease was also registered in higher education. The number of students for the academic year 2025/2026 was 64 thousand 671, compared to 64 thousand 817 in the previous year.

Of them, 34 thousand 208 students or 52.9 percent study in public universities, while 30 thousand 463 or 47.1 percent in private colleges.

Compared to the year 2024/2025, public universities have fewer students, while private institutions of higher education have recorded an increase in the number of registrations.
