The Qur’an as an inspiration for a successful education

Wednesday, February 4th 2026

Akif Ali, a 20-year-old from Virginia, just graduated with first class honors in Neuroscience and Physics from George Mason University. His achievement has gone viral not only for his young age, but for his unusual journey: he completed his entire pre-university education through homeschooling.

According to Akif, this “flexible” system allowed him to progress at his own pace and develop a high level of self-discipline. He attributes his academic success and perseverance in the face of difficult subjects to the process of memorizing the Quran at the Diyanet Center in the US.

His experiences challenge the preconceptions that homeschooling hinders socialization. “At first I believed it, but after I started university, I realized that this method gave me an advantage in self-motivation” – he says. This model of success has become a family tradition. His younger siblings, Fatima (18) and Affan (16), are following the same path, already being university medical students.

Fatima says the system allows them to progress by ability rather than age, while avoiding the negative social pressures of traditional schools. The case of the Ali family coincides with a growing trend in the US, where after 2020, more than 5 percent of children are being educated at home.

The parents of Akif, Asna and Kazami, emphasize that their goal was to create a safe and values-based environment. To support others, they have founded the Homeschool Army and the HIRA Academy, an online platform that educates students from around the world.

For her efforts, Akifi’s mother was nominated as a distinguished teacher by the National Association of High School Students in the US, proving that homeschooling can produce versatile and articulate individuals, ready to face the challenges of science. /check. com/
