Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan commented on Monday on regional tensions and nuclear talks between the US and Iran, stressing that an immediate war does not seem likely and underscoring the importance of continuing diplomatic dialogue, reports Anadolu.
Speaking in an interview with CNN Turk, Fidan said there does not appear to be an immediate threat of war in the region and that “it can be said that there is a possibility” of reaching a deal. agreement.
According to him, both sides are trying to buy time, but this is also part of the negotiation strategy.
He recalled Iran’s experience from previous attacks and added that the US has warned Tehran about the possibility of unexpected developments. “We received a call from (Secretary Marco) Rubio (at the time of the latest attack): ‘Tell the Iranians that in a few hours anything can happen,'” Fidan said.
He appreciated the willingness of the parties to continue negotiations and stressed that starting with the nuclear issue was an important decision.
“The nuclear issue is the most important issue. The region does not have the capacity to withstand a new war. We want to use all opportunities to prevent a possible war”, said the Turkish top diplomat.
Speaking about the options of military intervention, the minister said that regime change in Iran through an air strike or other action is an illusion.
He emphasized that Iran does not have atomic bombs and that there is no evidence that it is trying to produce them.
Referring to the situation in Syria and Iraq, he said that any alternative given to the people will affect the perception of the communities. Kurds and that after Syria comes the challenge of Iraq: “We hope that they will learn lessons and make wiser decisions, so that the transition there will be easier”.
Fidan also spoke about the presence of the PKK in Iraq. He said that the PKK occupies a lot of territory there and this is not just a problem of Turkey, but of the Iraqi state. “What kind of sovereign state are you (Iraq) that allows it to exist like this?” he said.
He added that the Iraqi government has the power to address this issue and foresees changes in the Sinjar-Mahmur-Kandil region in the near future. “We will cooperate with any government that is elected through voting, whoever comes”, said the Turkish Foreign Minister.
