The UN has expressed concern over the latest reported exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the situation constitutes a “critical moment” for reducing tensions amid regional escalation, reports Anadolu.
“What I can tell you is that the secretary general is concerned by the latest reported exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz,” UN spokesman Farhan told reporters. Haq.
“He emphasizes that this is a critical moment for reducing tensions and calls on all parties to show maximum restraint to avoid further escalation”, he added.
Haq stressed that the UN is calling “for all parties to fully respect the ceasefire and refrain from any action that could lead to any new escalation”.
He added that diplomatic efforts to reopen the Straits Hormuz is continuing amid renewed hostilities in and around the strait between US and Iranian forces.
“There is an effort underway,” Farhan Haq said when asked about mediation efforts.
He said Jorge Moreira da Silva, head of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), has been in consultations with countries in the region and held talks in New York, including with Iran’s permanent representative to UN.
“So he’s keeping this dialogue open and we’re seeing where we can go with it,” Haq said.
The comments come amid renewed hostilities between Iranian and US forces in and around this strategic waterway, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes each day.
The uncertainty has fueled concerns about rising energy prices, higher costs high shipping and insurance costs, as well as potential disruptions to global trade, including chemical fertilizer exports and agricultural supply chains. However, neither side has announced the failure of the ceasefire and efforts to end the war permanently have continued.
