Manchester United are becoming increasingly concerned about Harry Maguire’s future as he nears the end of his contract.
The 32-year-old defender has rediscovered his form under interim boss Michael Carrick, but there are fears he could follow Casemiro’s path and leave the club this summer when their contracts expire.
His return to the line-up at the heart of a back-four A favorite of Carrick’s players, he has helped the team to five wins in six games since the manager’s arrival, with the only blemish being an away draw against West Ham United.
According to reports, the club’s management are worried about the possibility of him leaving.
He is already eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs and has rejected offers from the Saudi Professional League as well as Milan this year.
Maguire is understood to want to stay at Manchester United, but is likely to have to take a pay cut to reach a new deal.
Carrick is aware of the positive impact the former Leicester City player has on the squad and spoke about his future earlier in the week.
He said: “Within the squad there has to be a balance – you want the potential and the enthusiasm of the youngsters, but you have to that ‘golden spot’ in the middle with players at their peak, and the experience is huge.”
“It’s hard to put a price on how valuable that is. Harry has gained a lot of experience with this club. Casemiro’s departure is another situation and we have to understand what that means,” he added.
Maguire is still at the club after a 12-month contract extension was activated last year.
before he turns 33, it remains unclear what his stance is on a possible renewal.
One positive news for him and the club is his current form.
Any remaining doubts about his ability to compete at this level have been put to rest after clean sheets against Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and even rivals Manchester City.
Asked if Maguire is in perhaps the best form of his career, Carrick replied: “There’s an argument for that. When you’re young, everything’s fresh, you’re brave and you don’t have a lot of ‘wounds’.
“You get to your peak years and you feel good, but you’ve had some ups and downs.
“When you get to the end of your career, experience should make you a better player – and we’ve seen that with Harry’s recent performances.
“That’s why experience is important. I felt it myself when I was playing – 31 or 32 were my best years, at that golden point where physically you’re still strong but you use experience to predict what’s coming.”
Maguire was very close to leaving after a poor spell in the 2022/23 season.
But he turned down a £30million move to West Ham, choosing to fight for a starting place at Old Trafford. Trafford”.
Now he has finally been reborn, after struggling for minutes in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation last season.
Carrick hinted that he hopes for a contract extension with the England international, adding: “Harry is an impressive character. Has had a great career so far. We hope he has many more to come.
“I think, even during his time here and with England, he has shown exactly who he is”./Express
