US Vice President JD Vance said today that Washington is “making progress” in negotiations with Iran, while emphasizing US President Donald Trump’s red line that Tehran should never have nuclear weapons, reports Anadolu.
“I spent a good part of the morning on the phone with Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, as well as with a number of our friends in the Arab world. I think we are making progress,” Vance told reporters when asked if the US continues to engage with the Iranians after Trump called Tehran’s response “totally unacceptable”.
“The fundamental question is whether we are making enough progress to meet the president’s red line. And the red line is very simple. He needs to feel confident that we have put in place a number of safeguards so that Iran never has a nuclear weapon,” Vance said.
“I think we’ve made progress in Pakistan, but we’ve made even more since then,” he added. him.
“The president has now steered us down the diplomatic path, and that’s what I’m focused on,” he continued.
Asked about Trump’s statements that he doesn’t think about the “financial situation of Americans” during negotiations with Iran, Vance replied: “I think that’s a misinterpretation of what the president said.” a very aggressive and intensive diplomatic process to make sure that doesn’t happen,” he added.
Vance said the ultimate goal is to give Americans assurances that Iran will never obtain nuclear weapons, describing the current diplomatic path as the president’s chosen option for now.
Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and Washington’s allies in the Persian Gulf, as well as closing the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The ceasefire was later extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.
On Sunday, Iran sent Pakistan its response to a US proposal to end the war, but Trump rejected it as “totally unacceptable”.
