Drinking coffee on an empty stomach is part of many people’s morning routine, but experts warn that it can have different effects on the body. While coffee helps you wake up, in some people it can cause increased stomach acid secretion, irritability and digestive problems.
For many people, the morning starts with a cup of coffee before breakfast. Although caffeine can quickly wake up the body and increase concentration, experts warn that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can cause certain problems in some people, especially if it is consumed daily and in large quantities.
Coffee stimulates the central nervous system thanks to caffeine, a substance that increases alertness and temporarily reduces the feeling of fatigue. However, when taken without food, the body may react to it more intensely.
One of the most common effects of drinking coffee on an empty stomach is increased stomach acid secretion. In sensitive individuals, this may cause burning, bloating, nausea or stomach upset. People with gastritis, reflux, or irritable bowel syndrome are especially susceptible.
Although coffee itself may not directly cause stomach ulcers, it can worsen existing indigestion symptoms.
Caffeine stimulates the secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone that naturally rises in the morning. Drinking coffee right after waking up, especially without eating, can lead to increased feelings of nervousness, a fast heart rate, or tremors.

It is important to note that the body’s response to coffee is not the same for everyone. While some drink coffee before breakfast for years without any problems, others feel discomfort after just one cup.
The reaction is influenced by genetics, caffeine sensitivity, sleep quality, stress, eating habits and general health.
Nutritionists advise not to drink coffee immediately after waking up, but after a light breakfast or at least with a glass of water and a small meal. They also recommend moderate caffeine consumption and avoiding very strong coffee on an empty stomach.
People who notice heartburn, irritability or indigestion after morning coffee should consider changing their habits or consulting a doctor.
