In Germany’s big cities, people from the Indian subcontinent are more often seen as delivery workers. However, many of them work in highly skilled occupations and have particularly good incomes.
They are not the only ones – some foreigners earn more than the average German worker, reports Fenix-magazin.de.
According to a study by the Institute for German Economics (IW), workers with Indian citizenship earn more in Germany. The average gross salary in 2024 was 5,393 euros. Then follow: Austrians (5,322), Americans (5,307), Irish (5,233) and Germans (4,177). All foreigners have an average income of €3,204.
The reason for the high incomes, especially among Indian nationals, according to IW, is that most work in high-paying technical occupations. They are most represented in the so-called MINT professions – mathematics, computing, natural sciences and technology.
The number of Indians in these professions almost quadrupled from 2012 to 2024, reaching more than 32,800. About a third of employed Indians between the ages of 25 and 44 work full-time in these sectors.
The study claims that this development is partly a consequence of the increase in the number of Indian students in Germany. Many of them have successfully completed their studies, stayed in the country and started to contribute to science and economics. The number of patent applications by Indian innovators has increased 12-fold between 2000 and 2022.
“Without skilled migration, the German economy would struggle to grow today – especially in the MINT areas and in the innovation segment. The migration of experts from India is a real success story”, says Axel Plünnecke from IW.
Another reason for the high wages is that many foreign workers live and work in urban, economically strong areas where average wages are higher.
In addition to Indians, both Austrians and Americans earn high wages due to their concentration in such regions. The analysis took into account nationalities with more than 5,000 full-time employees in Germany. The data comes from the statistics of the Federal Employment Agency. /tesheshi.com/
