When it comes to quality sleep, most of us know what to avoid – using phones before bed, drinking coffee. But, according to British nutritionist Frances Ralph, there are some foods that are often overlooked, but which negatively affect our sleep.
In an interview with Metro.co.uk, Ralph advises that chocolate consumption should be stopped after 3 pm.
“You may think that one or two dark chocolates after dinner is a healthy food full of antioxidants, but they can quietly sabotage your sleep,” he explains. it.
According to the expert, dark chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two stimulants that wake up the nervous system. Just 20 grams of dark chocolate can contain as much caffeine as a small cup of green tea, while theobromine can stay in the body for 6 to 8 hours, affecting the quality of sleep.
“If you like chocolate, enjoy it earlier in the day, ideally before 3 p.m., when the body can process these stimulants more easily,” adds the nutritionist.
But chocolate does not it is the only one that can affect badly. Ralph also mentions tomato-based sauces, which cause acid reflux, as well as aged cheeses and cured meats, which are rich in tyramine, a substance that promotes wakefulness and can prevent deep sleep.
The expert advises finishing the evening meal at least three hours before bedtime, and choosing snacks that do not contain “hidden” stimulants.
