The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that the U.S. military has completed its withdrawal from the al-Tanf base in southern Syria after nearly a decade, reports Anadolu.
“U.S. forces remain ready to respond to any threat from Daesh that may emerge in the region, while we support partner-led efforts to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist network,” said CENTCOM Commander, Admiral Brad. Cooper.
“Maintaining pressure on Daesh is critical to protecting US territory and strengthening regional security,” he added.
CENTCOM announced that the withdrawal from Garrison al-Tanf was completed on February 11 as part of a “deliberate and condition-based transition” under the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), established in 2014. to fight the Daesh terrorist group.
“The Syrian government has taken control of the strategic base at the border junction with Iraq and Jordan after the American withdrawal,” Syrian government sources told Anadolu yesterday, adding that units of the Syrian Army have been deployed there.
The US has used the al-Tanf base, which was expanded in 2017 and 2018, as well as observation balloons deployed there, to monitor the military activities of Iran-backed groups and the terrorist organization Daesh along an area of hundreds of kilometers between the border with Jordan and the Euphrates River.
