Tuesday, March 24th 2026

Iran appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, succeeding Ali Larijani, who was killed in an Israeli-American attack, the presidential office announced, reports Anadolu.

A former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Zolghadr previously served as secretary of the Council for the Determination of State Interests. He has held several other posts, including that of deputy interior minister and adviser to the head of the judiciary on strategic issues.

Zolghadr succeeds Larijani, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike in Tehran on March 17.

The US and Israel have continued airstrikes on Iran since February 28, killing more than 1,340 people so far, including then-leader supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq and the Gulf countries that host US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage as well as disrupting global markets and aviation.
