CNN: Trump sends negotiators Witkoff and Kushner to Pakistan for talks with Iran’s top diplomat

US President Donald Trump will send his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and adviser Jared Kushner to Pakistan for talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to a report published on Friday, Anadolu reports.

Talks are expected to begin this weekend, CNN reported, citing two anonymous US officials. They will not be attended by Vice President JD Vance, as Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, whom the Trump administration considers his counterpart, will not be present, CNN said.

However, Vance would be willing to travel to Islamabad if the talks gain enough momentum, officials said. Members of his staff will be part of the US delegation during the talks.

Araghchi is expected to begin on Friday evening a regional tour starting in Pakistan, then continuing to Oman and Russia.

“The purpose of my visits is to coordinate closely with our partners on bilateral issues and consult on regional developments. Our neighbors are our priority,” he wrote on the X platform.

Before following this announcement, Tehran and Islamabad were engaged in intense diplomacy. Araghchi held a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, discussing regional developments, the ceasefire and ongoing diplomatic efforts, according to Pakistani officials.

He also held separate talks with Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, although no details were provided. Based on these contacts, Pakistani government sources told Anadolu Agency that Araghchi is expected to arrive in Islamabad on Friday.

Pakistan is stepping up efforts to revive a second round of talks between Iran and the US. The sources said the discussions with Tehran could pave the way for new negotiations after the first round of direct talks held in Islamabad on April 11-12.

These talks came after Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire on April 8, which was later extended by Trump without a specific deadline. The developments come amid continued tensions since the outbreak of war on February 28, with efforts focused on reaching a broader agreement to end hostilities.
