G7 countries have reiterated the key importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), expressing concern over the growth and modernization of nuclear arsenals by Russia and China.

In a statement by the Directors’ Group on Non-Proliferation, member countries stressed that “concrete measures must be implemented to reduce the risk”, at a time when global tensions continue to rise.

The statement comes on the eve of the month-long review conference of the NPT, which is expected to start in New York, where the 191 state parties will try to reach a consensus on strengthening the treaty.

In this context, the G7 called on the United States of America to play a stabilizing role on the international stage and commit to multilateral strategic stability.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has proposed a new nuclear agreement between the US, Russia and China, also warned of the possibility of resuming nuclear tests, amid accusations against Beijing of covert activities.
