FIFA has introduced five new changes to the rules of the game ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will take place in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
According to the announcement, the purpose of the changes is to speed up the pace of the game and reduce delays, following widespread criticism of frequent interruptions in modern football.
One of the new rules limits the time players leave the field during substitutions to only 10 seconds, otherwise the team will be penalized for delaying the entry of the substitute player.
Also, throw-ins must be completed within 5 seconds, otherwise the ball passes to the opponent. Changes have also been made to on-field medical treatment, where players will be forced to leave for one minute after receiving help.
Another new rule restricts communication with the referee to the team captain only, while other players risk punishment if they surround the referee.
The most controversial change relates to the VAR system, which will now have wider powers, including the review of second yellow cards. and corner kick decisions.
FIFA says these rules aim to increase the dynamics and quality of the game, as they are expected to be tested for the first time at the world’s biggest football tournament.
