Germany will deploy naval units to the Mediterranean ahead of a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz

Germany’s Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, has announced the deployment of German naval units in the Mediterranean, in preparation for a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz, reports Anadolu.

Specifically, Pistorius told the Rheinische Post newspaper, a minesweeping ship and a command and supply ship will be sent, in order to be ready to act quickly in case of a mandate from parliament.

The German minister did not specify exactly when the ships are expected to depart.

He added that expanding the EU’s existing Shield mission, whose mandate has so far been limited to countering threats in the Red Sea, could be used as a legal framework.

This would require an adaptation of the legal framework and would also require the participation of the US and the UK in mission.

According to the minister, the German Navy would then contribute to free and safe navigation in the strait through its mine-clearing capabilities.

Since the start of the war on February 28, Tehran has maintained control of the Strait of Hormuz, while on April 13 an American naval blockade followed.
