A serious incident took place in Crete, Greece, where prisoners set fire to their cells as a sign of revolt because their request to be transferred to other premises within the building was rejected by the management.

Four prisoners were the protagonists of the event, in Agia Chania, while there were also injured people who were treated by prison guards and the administration of the institution.

These are four local prisoners, who, according to the Director of the Institution, Charalambos Kiomourtzis, at 21:00 on Friday requested to be transferred to another wing, due to the problems and frictions they had with other prisoners in the same cell radius.

Since it was time to count the prisoners, the prison guards in charge told them that they would consider the request after the count, according to “Protothema”.

More after, the four prisoners, in reaction and while inside the cell, set fire to one of the mattresses and the smoke created a suffocating atmosphere. Four prison officers opened the cell, took the prisoners out and managed to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.

The four prisoners were transported by EKAB ambulance to Hania Hospital, where they received medical services and returned to prison today.

Three prison officers who extinguished the fire were also transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, from where they were released after a few hours. A fire brigade arrived at the Prison Detention Centre, but there was no need to intervene.

In addition to the criminal proceedings, disciplinary proceedings will also follow for the arsonist prisoners. The immediate mobilization of the guards prevented the loss of life, as well as the spread of the fire to other cells, where there were also prisoners.
