Mattarella defends the UN and the EU: Attempts to weaken them are anti-historical

During the official celebrations of April 25, Italy’s Liberation Day, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, conveyed a strong message in defense of international institutions and the values of peace. From San Severino Marche, the Italian head of state warned against modern trends that aim to undo the structures of global cooperation, which were built on the ruins of the Second World War.

According to the reports of the news agency ANSA, Mattarella emphasized that institutions such as the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) are not just administrative structures, but a direct response to the horrors of dictatorships and war.

In his speech, President Mattarella pointed out that in recent years, dangerous efforts are appearing to weaken these peace mechanisms.

“We have been painful witnesses of anti-historical efforts to weaken, if not to eliminate, those paths”, declared Mattarella, referring to the projects of European unity and international order. According to him, ignoring common institutions means forgetting the lessons of history, calling for these organizations to become “more authoritative and efficient”.

The Italian head of state recalled that Italy’s journey towards freedom was guided by a unanimous call: “Peace, peace, peace”. Mattarella made a clear contrast between the war rhetoric of the dictatorships and the ideal of the Resistance.

“The dictatorships that started the Second World War had made the rhetoric of war a value. Against their plan a single call was raised: peace for every person, peace as the right of every people”, he underlined.

For President Mattarella, the true meaning of the Resistance remains relevant even today: it is the firm opposition to violence of man against man and the protection of peace as a universal right for every country.
