NATO’s top military official said Tuesday that he does not expect any further withdrawals of US troops from Europe – at least not soon – beyond the 5,000 troops that the US president announced would be withdrawn.
Lieutenant General Alex Grynkewich at NATO headquarters in Brussels said that redeployments are expected in the long term while European states continue to build defense capabilities, he reported. AP.
“5,000 troops will leave Europe. That’s all I expect in the short term,” he said.
President Donald Trump clashed with the German chancellor after Friedrich Merz said the US was being “embarrassed” by the Iranian leadership and criticized what he called a lack of US strategy in the war.
The number of troops leaving remains small compared to 80,000 American soldiers are stationed in Europe.
