The US is creating a center in Kenya where Americans who have been exposed to Ebola or have been infected with the virus will be placed in quarantine, reports Anadolu.
The decision to create a medical center in the East African country means that Americans will not be sent to the US for treatment, but will be treated at this location. One official said the decision was not political.
“I’m certainly not aware of any political factors. I know we made the decision to transport these individuals with the shortest possible transit time, because time can be crucial when it comes to Ebola,” the official told reporters.
“We felt it was better to transport these individuals to closer facilities, extremely high-quality tertiary care facilities, rather than facing a very long transit time to the U.S. These decisions were made to ensure we provide the best possible care and optimize what can be done for our American citizens abroad,” he added.
The 50-bed quarantine center is expected to become operational on Friday. Another official said biocontrol and isolation units will be brought in next “so that, if necessary, if we have individuals who show symptoms or test positive, we will be able to take care of them until they can be transported onward”. Monday.
Training will continue in the country, while another group will be sent after training this weekend.
The official said “a number” of officers who participated in the US response to the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak, the largest outbreak in history, are part of the first group now going to Kenya.
If a patient shows symptoms consistent with Ebola, he will is being transferred to what officials called a “tertiary center,” for which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State Department are working to determine a location.
“We know these will be high-level centers to provide excellent care to our citizens. Field officers, public health service and medical professionals on the ground in Kenya will decide when the transport should begin,” the official said.
