Netanyahu aims for new energy route through Israel amid tensions in Strait of Hormuz

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that tensions around the Strait of Hormuz could accelerate the global shift to alternative energy routes outside the Gulf, suggesting that Israel could become part of a future transport corridor to the Mediterranean, reports Anadolu.

Speaking at a seminar in the Jordan Valley, Netanyahu said world powers have historically responded to energy crises by diversifying supply routes and reducing dependence on unstable transit areas, says an announcement from the Israeli government.

“This is what will happen here as well. We have an opportunity here to be part of this road to the Mediterranean,” Netanyahu said. He did not provide details on the project or the corridor he was talking about, nor did he name the countries that might be involved.

His comments come at a time of growing international concerns about the security of maritime trade and energy supplies linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which much of global oil shipments pass.
