A patient receives ‘Jaluka Avacharan’ (leech therapy) from Indian ayurvedic doctor Vyasadeva Mahanta at the SGVP Campus on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on December 28, 2013. Leech therapy, with evidence of its use dating back to 800 B.C., is making a comeback in modern medicine and is used to stimulate circulation to salvage skin grafts and reconstructive surgery, and other conditions such as varicose veins, muscle cramps, thrombophlebitis, and osteoarthritis among others.
