Adem Jashari was born on 28 of November 1955 in Prekaz, Municipality of Skenderaj. Adem was the third son of Shaban and Zahide Jashari. Adem Jashari took the first lessons at home country and finished high school in Skenderaj. Adem Jashari was educated in a patriotic spirit in the family environment, because the father of Adem Jashari, Shaban Jashari, was a teacher in several villages of Drenica.
The teacher’s mission was moral, national and patriotic that Shaban Jashari continued and applied to his children and many generations, in order to educate and train entire generation in the spirit of patriotism and by cultivating and raising national consciousness. The act of Ahmet Dalia sacrifice was also an additional lesson to demonstrate heroic work of locals that had began long ago opposing with weapons Serbian chetnik gangs. Therefore, this message was best understood by his son Adem, who at the young age was engaged in patriotic – illegal activity, actively taking part in demonstrations of spring 1981.
Immediately after that, another event which has given the figure to Adem Jashari and his family, is that the Serbian government must not be allowed to continue its rule, was a resistance of Nebi and Tahir Meha against Yugoslav military forces. This act of sacrifice for the homeland of the Tahir e Nebi Meha has left deep impression in the spirit and determination of Shaban, Adem and Hamëz Jahari, who at the funeral of these martyr, made a vow in the front of Tahir Meta’s body “The war you started, we will continue until the last drop of blood”. Determination to sacrifice for the homeland was transcendent act of Adem Jashari and his family.
This proves that his orientation in searching the path of freedom and how to make effort and to sacrifice to liberate the country from violence and terror of the Serbian authorities. Thus, patriotic activity of Adem Jashari, has started in 80’s to take new directions by becoming a member of illegal patriotic organization in that time. During this period he has distributed tracts, through which was required mobilization of people for liberation.
In the Adem Jahari group also were included patriots as: Ilaz Kodra, Jakup Nura, Sahit Jashari, Hashim Thaçi, Sami Lushtaku, Fadil Kodrat etc. While Adem Jashari for its national and patriotic activity will be known also for organization of strong protests that took place in Skederaj in 1989, in a sign of revolt and frustration against the constitutional amendments and revocation of Kosovo’s Constitution of 1974, made by Serbia.
As a continuation of national activity, in 1989 has begun merging of several different patriotic homeland groups within and outside Kosovo in People’s Movement of Kosovo. Activities of LCP would become pastoral of national wide liberation movement and at the same time for the blood feud reconciliation. However, after the cessation of all Kosovo’s institution in 1990, idea to organize them in military aspect gets a new dimension, from LCP, which was not operating entirely in public.
This phenomenon was reflected especially after the 1990, when Adem Jashari committed an armed action on the police station in Skenderaj, in which action a Serbian police officer was hurt. Other actions that has for a subject to attack Serbs patrols and police stations, in which participated Adem Jashari with others, are those in Mitrovica, at Ura e Gjakut, in Shipol, Runik, Drenas etc. Whereas with his commandment are committed armed actions in Shtime, Prizren, Klina etc. Operations/actions’s line of this armed formation in maintained in relation between Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania since 1990.
Except some other groups that have also exercised on military ranges in Albania, the only formation (nucleus) of Adem Jashari was not dissolved. A group of activists from Deçani where arrested, while other groups where not loud.
On the 3rd November 1991, in Albania went a group of activist to conduct appropriate military exercises and to be trained for armed struggle. Adem Jashari who also led a group, was a part of this group together with Ilaz Kodra, Sahit Jashari, Fadil Kodra and Murat Jashari. After the completion of training, the group returned in Drenica on 7th of December 1991, equipped with weapons. This group was tasked to expand the ranks.
Serbian secret services have fall into the trail of armed formation and Serbian police was ready to raid its surrounding and his capture. On December 30, 1991, Serb police – military expedition undertook an action to capture the group. But, these activists where not armed and where not trained to be surrender, as was expressed Adem Jashari itself.
Adem Jashari, his brother who has been on holidays, Rifat, Hamëz Jashari, Fadil Kodra, Ilaz Kodra and Sahit Jashari, decided to fight and to break the siege by all means.
Despite the police has engaged large number of people, even heavy technique, armored vehicles and helicopters, after the group resistance failed to defeat fighters. This event made great resonance.
From many sides of Drenica, on that day and that evening had moved people who were willing to join resistance of Prekaz. After the clash with Serbian police forces, the entire group of Adem Jashari passes into the illegality, until the beginning of the liberation war in Kosovo.
On April 5th, 1993, in the house of Adem Jashari was held an important meeting. Besides of members of armed formation Adem Jashari, in the meeting were present also political activists. At this meeting was decided to expand military formation.
Precisely at this meeting Adem Jashari proposes that carried actions in Kosovo, to be made on behalf of “Kosovo Army”. At this meeting was decided that as the Army Commander to be appointed Adem Jashari. Attacks on Serbian police forces already have coordination. By coordination, expansion and restructuring of the armed groups was created the Kosovo Liberation Army (1993).
Adem Jashari together with Hamza and many comrades in later years were even more organized and have taken several actions against the Serbian army and police. For this national and patriotic activities Serbian authorities had organized criminal procedure, where the District Court of Pristina, in absentia, in 1997 was imposed a prison term of twenty years for Adem Jasharin, Ilaz Kodrën, Sahit Jasharin, Fadil Kodrën, Jakup Nurën, Zenun Kodrën dhe Rexhep Selimin, while with 10 years was “condemned” Hashim Thaqi. In this case we can say that Adem Jashari was condemned not only with 20 years, but 6O years imprisonment, because Serbia had sentenced him three times by 2O years in prison in absentia, in 1991, then 1996, 1997.
Combat unit of Prekazi, is identified by the name of Adem Jashari, due to the high strategic and military qualities, thanks to his character and military features. All people interested in an armed uprising to solve the problem of Kosovo were interested to contact personally Adem Jashari. His military core, his structure was armed and ready to grow and expand.
Intensification of armed KLA actions begins with the September 1997 with attack on 12 police stations. From armed action carried by KLA against police forces, after the addition of systematic violence by Serbian forces in Kosovo, KLA have been moved to another stage, the direct match with Serbian forces, then in battle, at the end of November 1997, when in Rezalla e Re fight occured with multiple police forces of Serbia. In this way the battle interrupted column of Serb forces that had raided attack in village Vojnik, where a day earlier, Serb police patrols were hit by gunfire from one of the earliest fighters of the KLA, Abedin Rexha – Sandokani.
This battle was lead by Adem Jashari and other fighters as Mujë Krasniqi, Rexhep Selimi, Sylejman Selimi, Ilaz Kodra, Ilaz Dërguti etc.. This is the first battle and victory of KLA unit. This great battle echoed in public opinion.
On 28 November 1997, at the funeral of teacher from Llausha Halit Geci, who was killed by Serb forces during the withdrew after failing two days ago, the KLA came out in the political and military scene of Kosovo. Open emergence of the KLA has made Serbian security forces not to feel security in the Drenica area. They started with barricades at certain checkpoints with special reinforcements.
But, as far as KLA structure was strengthened and spread on the ground, the Serbian reinforcements were added. Provocations and attempted attacks of Serbian police did not cease.
Serbian police, with its special units organized an attack on the house of the Jashari on January 22nd, 1998. The attack began in the early hours of the morning, and was fulminant, but encountered on resistance and agility of the Jashari family, which was prepared and always guarding day and night.
Serbian special commando unit was withdrew after half an hour, because the members of Jashari family who were inside the house responded with fire. It was the second attack of Serb forces on the Adem Jashari house. In this clash were injured two Jashari young girls.
As a counter-response to the Serb forces on 28 February 1998, a comrade group led by Adem Jashari attacked Serbian police patrols killing four policemen and wounding two of them.
This, in the 90’s, Jashari family had become the main target of attacks by Serb military and police forces that were deployed in Kosovo. Adem Jashari didn’t stop for a moment military actions against Serbian military and police forces until his heroic sacrifice.
Adem Jashari was married Adile Rama from Akrashtica and had five children (three boys and two girls), Lulzimi, Fitimi, Kushtrimi, Shqipja and Marigona.
