Alarming situation in Albania due to floods, hundreds evacuated so far

Heavy rains during the last few hours have caused numerous problems in some regions of the country, causing increased river flows, flooding of agricultural lands, landslides and difficulties in road traffic.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the situation is more problematic in the regions of Shkodër, Durrës, Lezë, Gjirokastër, Dibër and Berat, while problems of limited or stable situation.

In the Shkodër District, the increase in the levels of the Drin, Kir and Bunë rivers has caused flooding in the territory of the Shkodër Municipality, mainly in the Ana e Mali and Dajç administrative units. The structures of the municipality and civil emergencies are located on the ground and are continuously monitoring the situation, while the hydrovores are working at full capacity and the water levels remain below the critical quotas.

In Durrës District, a total of 5,477 dwellings have been verified, of which damages have been found in 1,711 cases. As a result, 851 people were evacuated, mainly in the areas of Sukth and Katund i Ri, where about 2,000 hectares of agricultural land are under water. The authorities are continuing the work to ascertain and assess the damages.

In the Lezhë District, the water level has decreased in the agricultural lands, while the forces on the ground are working to remove the water from some houses. All hydrovores have been operating at full capacity, with the exception of that of Gocaj due to the lack of electricity. The Drin River continues to decline, while the Mat River has increased in level due to discharges from the Shkopet and Qafë Mollë hydropower plants. No problems are reported on the road axes.

In Gjirokastër and Dibër counties, work is being done to clean some road axes blocked by landslides, as well as to remove water from some flooded objects.

Meanwhile, in Berat and Elbasan counties, the increase in the flow of the Osum and Devoll rivers has caused flooding of agricultural areas. The situation is being continuously monitored by the responsible structures.

Armed Forces officers have also been deployed on the ground, who, in coordination with the National Civil Defense Agency and the Ministry of Defense, are assisting in the transportation of residents, the distribution of aid and the support of emergency operations. /Euronews Albania
