What is currently happening in the Strait that has the world embarrassed?
The Revolutionary Guard says that ships that have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the last hour have been given free passage as a gesture of “good will” despite the US blockade. This can be interpreted as a kind of olive branch, but we must consider the complex nature of the situation.
Iran began the brief unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz by giving the green light to some ships not related to its “adversaries”. This is a clear indication of how Iran is steering the process of overcoming the strait crisis towards a new control mechanism.
As seen in a map recently released by the IRGC, there is a danger zone in the southern waters near Oman and a safe zone very close to Iran’s coast. It is a sign of Iran’s intention to control and have more and more authority over the strait. It’s a playing card he won’t give up easily.
The tax plan is also important in this regard. Despite the goodwill gesture, Iran is talking about war reparations, and one place where those reparations could be taken is the Strait of Hormuz and the shipping tariffs it plans to impose.
As for the bigger picture of the negotiations, there are many points of contention. Iran is seeking a comprehensive end to war across the region, security guarantees, sanctions relief, unfreezing of frozen assets, regional relations – and above all – Iran’s nuclear file and highly enriched uranium stockpile.
But for now, uncertainty is the key word. The fragile situation makes it difficult to talk about the possibility of successful negotiations in the future. /tesheshi
