The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has called for the United Nations to be “renovated and reformed” to adapt to the realities of the 21st century and to better reflect current global challenges.

Speaking in Barcelona during the fourth meeting “In Defense of Democracy”, Sanchez warned of increasing pressures on multilateralism, international law and democratic institutions. He stressed that the UN should become more efficient, transparent, inclusive and representative, adding that in the future the organization should be led by a woman, as a matter of justice and credibility.

“It is time to move from engagement to action,” he said, warning that democracy faces threats from both inside and outside.

Sanchez also called for stronger regulations on social networking platforms, warning that algorithms they should not reward hatred, polarization or misinformation. According to him, technology can be a force of progress, but without clear rules it risks deepening divisions in society.
